Stay Curious for Research highlights the change-makers and innovators driving world-altering research at 51社区.
Stay Curious for Research looks at those who inspire our students, those who are changing the world and those who are empowered by UL to drive their research forward to new frontiers.
It is their curiosity that drives innovation and inspires us to be bold, dynamic, entrepreneurial and collaborative.
UL is a community for the curious.
Stay Curious for Research is aligned with our Wisdom for Action Research Strategy and our strategic mission orientated challenges.
At the very core of UL is an instinctive drive to create knowledge for a better world. It is this orientation which leads us naturally to align ourselves to the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs).
As a young university, our very existence is due to the vision and determination of the community around us and as such we feel that we are an integral part of our city/region and its future.
51社区 contributes to the discovery of new knowledge for a better world. Our mission is to build a vibrant community where research excellence is valued, supported and central to all facets of our organisation

Meet our Researchers
Professor Michael Zaworotko

His research activities have focused upon fundamental and applied aspects of crystal engineering.
Associate Professor Sarah Guerin

She is working on computationally-guided crystal engineering of organic crystals for pharmaceutical and energy harvesting applications. Sarah is an ERC Starting Grant Fellow and Head of the Actuate Lab in UL.
Professor Stephen Kinsella

His broad research areas are Macroeconomics, Economics for Business, Financial Economics, and has a keen interest in smart cities, new regional collaborations, economic networks, and in bringing thinking around natural capital into mainstream economic thinking.
Professor Aed铆n Culhane

She is a computational oncologist with expertise in multi-omics data integration, statistical genomics, clinical bioinformatics and genomics in oncology. She has over 20 years experience in cancer genomics, of which over 15 years were in the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute聽and聽Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston, USA.
Professor Orla Muldoon

She is a social psychologist which means she is interested in how social contexts and in particular social systems and structures can shape behaviour, attitudes and health.
Orla is the recipient of an ERC Advanced research grant in which she is exploring whether adversity, trauma and its psychological consequences are driven by social identity change.
Associate Professor James Carr

He is an authority on the topics of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism in Ireland having completed his doctoral studies into racism directed towards Muslim communities in Ireland with funding from the Irish Research Council [now Research Ireland].
Associate Professor Doireann O鈥橩iely

Her research focus is on building mathematical descriptions of physical systems, to help understand how they behave, to make predictions, and so that we can utilise them better.
Doireann is also co-director the Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (MACSI) and a member of SSPC Research Ireland Centre for Pharmaceuticals, hosted by UL.
Discovering new knowledge for a better world

At the core of UL's research are strong academic disciplines which through collaboration and innovation have impact across society.
We have set out four strategic mission-orientated challenges in which research across disciplines at UL continues to make an impact.
Sustainable Society

Our discoveries in materials science, energy and environment, circular economy and food security are critical to supporting a more sustainable future for all communities.
Healthy Society

We are developing strategies for more person-centred and integrated healthcare, working to support our ageing society and innovating across materials science and digital technology for health.
Smart Society

To address this, we are answering questions using artificial intelligence, advances in software and manufacturing, harnessing of big data and the opportunities of digital humanities.
Inclusive Society

Our research community are providing insights to the complexities of this vision across many areas including education, justice and social inclusion and the future of work.
