The aim of this module is to prepare students to use Irish in their work context. It is an intensive language course. All language skills are developed, and common language themes in everyday working life are dealt with. Students focus on specific terminology relating to the professional setting. The primary goal is to encourage and develop the confidence of participants to gradually use more Irish in the workplace.

The syllabus includes the following themes: Irish for the professional context; meeting people; talking about your working life and your position; describing the workplace and work conditions; organising schedules; dealing with favours and requests; time management; dealing with complaints; written Irish â written correspondence; names and surnames in Irish; place names; giving orders; negotiating and arguing, and making plans for the future. Grammar and language accuracy are dealt with systematically in the context of module topics.

- grasp the general meaning of spoken and written texts (regular correspondence / voice messages) on topics relating to the workplace and their own professional context;
- participate in conversations about course topics, common topics relating to their everyday work context and a range of written texts;
- present vocabulary and terminology relating to their workplace or special interest topic to colleagues in an oral presentation;
- steer conversations on predictable, familiar topics in Irish;
- and design sample templates for written correspondence in Irish (including content relating to Official Languages Act (Amendment) 2021) for the professional setting.
Assessment
DĂ©anfar measĂșnĂș ar bhonn leanĂșnach, cur i lĂĄthair Ăł bhĂ©al agus tascanna scrĂofa, mar shampla. Assessment will be on a continuous basis, for example, oral presentation and written assignments.
The majority of applicants will be mature students (23 years or over on 1 January, year of registration). Current 51ÉçÇű students may also apply. Applicants who are not current UL or mature students, are required to hold, at the time of enrolment, the established Leaving Certificate (or approved equivalent) with a minimum of six subjects. These must include: two H5 (Higher) grades and four O6 (Ordinary) grades or four H7 (Higher) grades. Subjects must include Maths, Irish or another language, & English. Grade F6 in Foundation Maths also satisfies minimum entry requirements. A minimum H4 grade in Irish or TEG B1 is required and applicants should take the to assess and confirm their level.
