Research Focus

The AI-ERA (AI- Ethics, Regulation and Accountability) Research Group – is a cross-discipline research group consisting of researchers focusing on AI and questions of social and environmental impact. The group investigates AI by understanding the technical, commercialisation, and business models as innovation pipelines that can be analysed and understood in terms of ethics, regulation and accountability. Our research examines the state of the art and emerging trends in this AI Era. AI is a global, environmental and social phenomenon that requires innovative research approaches. The research group responds to this challenge by bringing together leading researchers to investigate AI.

Dr Martin Cunneen

Associate Professor Martin Cunneen’s research focuses on promoting a more critical understanding of the current AI era. His research over the past decade has investigated the risks, ethics and governance questions of AI assistants, large language models, autonomous vehicles, and robotics. Grounded in interdisciplinary methodologies, his work continually innovates to address the rapidly changing and disruptive world of AI. Dr Cunneen leads a group of cross-discipline researchers focusing on anticipating and addressing emerging ethical, legal, and social risks. The group’s research focuses on supporting broader national, European and global AI governance research by developing evidence-based region-specific governance frameworks that guide both academic and commercial innovation. In particular, his focus on greater AI transparency and accountability focuses on more equitable and inclusive AI systems. By situating AI research at the intersection of technology development and public policy, the research group works together to inform AI Governance strategies globally through critical analysis of regulatory and ethical research to better inform AI innovation and commercialisation.

Dr. Ruhi Anand


Ruhi is a postdoctoral researcher on the Xtreme Project. Her research interests lie at the intersection of Law and Technology. In 2023, she published an article titled 'DSA and Vulnerabilities'. Her doctoral research looked at the formation, regulation and governance of Regional Blocs. Ruhi also has a keen interest in the development of learning strategies and pedagogies for higher education and is pursuing a Masters in Teaching, Learning and Development. Ruhi is a postdoctoral researcher, researching the regulation of extended reality technologies. She also facilitates in the day-to-day management of the work flows for the lab.

Dr. Hala Jaber​.
Dr. Hala Jaber is a Palestinian community musician and a classical flute player. She completed She obtained her Ph.D. in Arts. Practice (Music) at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, UL (2020). Her PhD research examined community-music approaches and best practices when working in the context of post-conflict migration. Hala's research interests revolve around understanding how various community music approaches prompts integration, collaboration, and participation. He current research is on the use of Mixed reality, AI relating to potential community music initiatives.

AI and XR Futures Art, Culture and Technology PhD Researcher. Liam is a UL XTREME Living Lab PhD researcher exploring how AI and XR transform artistic practice, performance, and cultural experience. An accomplished musician and sound engineer with extensive industry experience, he investigates new creative workflows, audience engagement models, and ethical challenges emerging at the intersection of immersive technologies, music, the wider arts ecosystem, and cultural policy debates.

Homayoun  is a Trustworthy AI PhD researcher examining AI and XR governance, with a focus on market development, commercialisation, and responsible innovation. With a degree in AI, an MSc in Machine Learning, and extensive software development experience, he bridges technical, business, and ethical perspectives to support robust, human-centred deployment of emerging intelligent and immersive technologies across industry domains.

Professor Raymond Friel


Raymond J. Friel, a graduate of UCC and the University of Exeter, specializes in contract and commercial law, authoring leading treatises in these areas. He has held visiting professorships at prestigious institutions such as Boston College Law School and the University of New Hampshire Law School. His extensive publications appear in renowned journals, including the International and Comparative Law Quarterly and Fordham Journal of International Law. Currently, he serves as Director of the International Commercial and Economic Law Research Group and examines for both the Kings Inns and Law Society of Ireland.

Amanda Clifford, Professor of Physiotherapy at the 51ÉçÇø, specializes in designing and evaluating interventions to improve health, prevent falls, and optimize rehabilitation in older adults and people with neurological conditions, including Parkinson's disease. Her work explores the role of technology and the arts—such as music and dance—in promoting health and wellbeing. She has collaborated internationally, contributed to European falls prevention networks, and co-developed a patented therapeutic device for neck pain (FLEXOR). Amanda also has a strong interest in pedagogy, interprofessional education, and enhancing teaching and assessment practices in higher education.

Prof Masahide Nuki head shot


A Full Professor of economics at the Josai University, Japan. He earned his graduate degree from Hitotsubashi University and specializes in economic policy, particularly environmental policy. He collaborates with the Japan Automotive Recyclers Association (JARA), a nonprofit organization, and participates in its research activities. In 2010, this initiative received the ENERGY GLOBE Award for international environmental efforts. His interests include building a sustainable society that embraces AI and cultural diversity, as well as the economic policies and regulations needed to support it.

Prof Dagmar Monett


A Full Professor of Computer Science at the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin), specializing in Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering. She is Head of the Computer Science Division and Co-Director of the M.Sc. Digital Transformation programme. A Co-Founding Member of the Institute for Data-Driven Digital Transformation and AGI Sentinel Initiative, she mentors startups and serves as an AI expert at #humanAIze.With over 36 years of experience, Prof. Monett’s research focuses on AI, machine learning, AI ethics, and defining intelligence, including her creation of the Defintly App. Her contributions continue to shape the understanding of AI, its ethics, and its applications, bridging technology, education, and society.

Jennifer Cassidy


A diplomatic scholar at the University of Oxford, where she lectures on Diplomacy and International Law, Digital Diplomacy, and Gender and Diplomacy. Her PhD (2017) from the University of Oxford focused on the emerging discipline of Digital Diplomacy, with a specific focus on the changing nature of digital diplomatic signalling and online strategic narratives during times of political crisis. Jennifer produced the first edited volume on Gender and Diplomacy: Theory and Practice (Routledge). Prior to teaching, Jennifer served as a diplomatic attaché to Ireland's Permanent Mission to the United Nations (New York), European External Action Service to the Kingdom of Cambodia, and Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Headquarters during the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Jennifer also contributes regularly to media commentary, including the BBC, Sky News, ABC Australia and The Irish Times

  • Cambridge University, September 2024: Martin Cunneen led the XTREME Living Lab Panel at Tacit Engagement in the Digital Age (TEDA) 2024 Cambridge University Conference 

    • As part of the panel, Tanaka Gandidzanwa presented a paper on the Promise and Perils of an Immersive WhatsApp

  • Dublin, November 2024: Ruhi Anand represented Xtreme Living Lab at the first AI and Art citizens assembly in Dublin. The proceedings of this assembly will be used to advise the policy for the use of AI for Art in Ireland.

  • Maynooth, November 2024: Ruhi Anand presented a paper on the facade of artificial intelligence and its implications of data work on labour with attention to digital and immersive spaces.
